How to change a shipping address on a Shopify order

You can update an order's shipping address from its page in Shopify admin after it's placed. Here's how, and when it isn't possible. Billing addresses can't be changed.

Updated October 30, 2026

Edit the address

  1. In Shopify admin, go to Orders and click the order.
  2. Open the menu in the Customer section and choose Edit shipping address.
  3. Update the fields and resolve any validation warning.
  4. Save your changes, then check the Summary for any tax difference.

What happens to taxes

Shopify recalculates taxes for the new destination on unfulfilled orders. The Summary shows the previous tax, the new tax and the difference to collect or refund.

When you can't change it

  • Managed Markets orders can't move to a different country, province or state.
  • Orders placed through Facebook or Instagram can't have the address edited in admin.
  • Imported, Shop Pay Installments and local delivery orders are among those whose taxes can't be changed.

Counter can handle address changes in your store's chat, within rules you publish, and can hold any change for a teammate's approval. On Shopify it needs the Growth plan or above.
