Product recommendations
Growth+Asks what they need, then suggests what's in stock.
Before it searches, Counter asks what the shopper wants, how they'll use it and their budget. Then it reads your live catalog and shows only the products that meet every requirement.
- Prices and stock come from Shopify or Medusa at the moment of asking. There's nothing to sync
- Matching is strict: every requirement, inside the budget, or nothing
- Up to five product cards with image, variant and price, each linking to that variant's page
- “Is the Ridgeline in stock in 154?” gets a live answer
- Shoppers in a hurry can say “surprise me” to skip the questions
Merchandising
Your priorities, applied to every suggestion.
Decide which products come first and which never come up. Boosts change the order of good matches. They never push a product that doesn't fit what the shopper asked for.
- Boost up to 10 products or collections and drag them into order
- Never recommend items by tag, product type or title, such as final sale, gift cards and samples
- Show only in-stock variants, or include sold-out ones with a label
- When nothing matches, offer a person, show other products, or say so
- See how many products were recommended and in how many conversations

Margin guard
It won't give away your margin.
Counter checks each basket against Shopify's cost per item and refuses any discount that would take your margin below the floor you set. If a product has no cost, it goes to your team, or Counter uses a cost you assume.
- Default floor of 35% margin after the discount
- Checks the margin on the whole basket and on each item
- Choose an assumed cost, as a share of price, for products without one
- Prices and costs are read again from your store when the code is created
Using Shopify cost per item
| Item | Price | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Ridgeline 154 | $389.00 | $210.00 |
| Drift Bindings, M | $64.00 | $30.00 |
| Basket | $453.00 | $240.00 |

Scenarios
Say when a discount is worth giving.
Scenarios describe the moments you're happy to discount, each with its own maximum. Counter checks the shopper's situation and reason against them before offering anything.
- Four triggers: first purchase, a problem with a recent order, a larger cart, and price hesitation
- Each scenario has its own maximum and applies to the whole store or one collection
- The AI checks the shopper's reason against the scenario, and they get one chance to rephrase
- Shoppers never see scenario names, so there's no list of offers to game

How a code is issued
Created for this basket, checked on the server.
The shopper taps “Check for a discount”. Everything after that happens against your live store, not the chat.
- 01
Reads the basket
On Shopify themes the chat reads the cart directly. Medusa storefronts pass the cart to Counter. Subscriptions and baskets that already have a discount go to your team.
- 02
Prices it again on the server
Prices, stock, costs, collections and the customer's order history are read from your store, not taken from the chat.
- 03
Checks every rule
About twenty checks: scenario, exclusions, minimum purchase, savings cap, no stacking, and the margin floor.
- 04
Creates a code for these items
A fixed-amount code for the quoted items and subtotal, with an expiry. With once per customer on, it's also tied to the shopper's verified email.
- 05
Or asks a teammate
Above your approval threshold, the request goes to your inbox with every check, and the shopper is told a teammate will review it.

FAQ
Products and discounts, answered.
Can Counter add products to the shopper's cart?
- Not yet. Each product card links to the product page with the matching variant selected, so the shopper adds it to the cart there.
Will it recommend products that are sold out?
- Not by default. With “Only in-stock variants” on, sold-out variants are left out. Turn it off and they're shown with an “Out of stock” label.
How does Counter keep discounts from eating my margin?
- Every code has to pass your savings cap, your minimum purchase and your margin floor, calculated from Shopify's cost per item. Anything above your approval threshold waits for a teammate.
Can shoppers stack the code with others or use it on other products?
- No. Codes can't be combined with other discounts, and they only apply to the items in the quoted basket with a minimum purchase of that basket's total.
Does this work on Medusa?
- Yes. Recommendations need your storefront URL so cards can link to products. Discount codes are created as Medusa promotions, and because Medusa has no cost per item, the margin check uses a cost you assume. Boosting collections and handing out existing codes are available on Shopify only.
Which plan includes recommendations and discount codes?
- Growth and above. Both share your AI conversation allowance with every other topic.
